    SHCal13 Southern Hemisphere calibration, 0–50,000 years cal BP

    The Southern Hemisphere SHCal04 radiocarbon calibration curve has been updated with the addition of new data sets extending measurements to 2145 cal BP and including the ANSTO Younger Dryas Huon pine data set. Outside the range of measured data, the curve is based upon the Northern Hemisphere data sets as presented in IntCal13, with an interhemispheric offset averaging 43 ± 23 yr modeled by an autoregressive process to represent the short-term correlations in the offset

    Efficient Recognition of Partially Visible Objects Using a Logarithmic Complexity Matching Technique

    An important task in computer vision is the recognition of partially visible two-dimensional objects in a gray scale image. Recent works addressing this problem have attempted to match spatially local features from the image to features generated by models of the objects. However, many algo rithms are considerably less efficient than they might be, typ ically being O(IN) or worse, where I is the number offeatures in the image and N is the number of features in the model set. This is invariably due to the feature-matching portion of the algorithm. In this paper we discuss an algorithm that significantly improves the efficiency offeature matching. In addition, we show experimentally that our recognition algo rithm is accurate and robust. Our algorithm uses the local shape of contour segments near critical points, represented in slope angle-arclength space (θ-s space), as fundamental fea ture vectors. These feature vectors are further processed by projecting them onto a subspace in θ-s space that is obtained by applying the Karhunen-Loève expansion to all such fea tures in the set of models, yielding the final feature vectors. This allows the data needed to store the features to be re duced, while retaining nearly all information important for recognition. The heart of the algorithm is a technique for performing matching between the observed image features and the precomputed model features, which reduces the runtime complexity from O(IN) to O(I log I + I log N), where I and N are as above.     A Software/Hardware Platform For Rapid Prototyping of Video and Multimedia Designs

    Traditional design and test of complex multimedia systems involves a large number of test vectors and is a difficult and time-consuming task. The simulation times are prohibitively long on current desktop computers. Driving actual design scenarios and timing burst behavior which produce real-time effects is difficult to do with current simulation environments. This paper describes a rapid emulation framework for accessing multiple hardware IP blocks on an FPGA. This solution involves an abstraction of the FPGA platform by having a virtual socket layer that resides between the design and the test vehicles. A rapid prototyping platform is thus created, and its use with complex video and multimedia systems is described

    Myosin II regulates activity dependent compensatory endocytosis at central synapses

    Recent evidence suggests that endocytosis, not exocytosis, can be rate limiting for neurotransmitter release at excitatory CNS synapses during sustained activity and therefore may be a principal determinant of synaptic fatigue. At low stimulation frequencies, the probability of synaptic release is linked to the probability of synaptic retrieval such that evoked release results in proportional retrieval even for release of single synaptic vesicles. The exact mechanism by which the retrieval rates are coupled to release rates, known as compensatory endocytosis, remains unknown. Here we show that inactivation of presynaptic myosin II (MII) decreases the probability of synaptic retrieval. To be able to differentiate between the presynaptic and postsynaptic functions of MII, we developed a live cell substrate patterning technique to create defined neural circuits composed of small numbers of embryonic mouse hippocampal neurons and physically isolated from the surrounding culture. Acute application of blebbistatin to inactivate MII in circuits strongly inhibited evoked release but not spontaneous release. In circuits incorporating both control and MIIB knock-out cells, loss of presynaptic MIIB function correlated with a large decrease in the amplitude of evoked release. Using activity-dependent markers FM1–43 and horseradish peroxidase, we found that MII inactivation greatly slowed vesicular replenishment of the recycling pool but did not impede synaptic release. These results indicate that MII-driven tension or actin dynamics regulate the major pathway for synaptic vesicle retrieval. Changes in retrieval rates determine the size of the recycling pool. The resulting effect on release rates, in turn, brings about changes in synaptic strength

    Capabilities needed in Information management for a digital built Britain

    Network FOuNTAIN is the Network For ONTologies And Information maNagement in Digital Built Britain, a project funded by the Centre for Digital Built Britain. The vision of the Network is for all stakeholders in Digital Built Britain (DBB) to be able to meet their information needs. With the establishment of concepts such as Building Information Modelling and Common Data Environments, built environment design, construction and operation are becoming increasingly information-intensive. The Network undertook five workshop activities between July and December 2018. This paper summarises the proceedings of these workshops, and in particular establishes future capabilities needed to realise the vision of DBB. The first workshop sought to establish the scope of “Information Management”. It was concluded that the capability to gauge Information Management Maturity was needed. The second and third workshops focused on ontologies and reviewed the variety of standards currently available. It was concluded that the capability was needed to establish the appropriate scope of standardisation, and to design or extend existing ontologies in general. The capability was also needed to develop current classification systems, schema and frameworks, Uniclass 2015 in particular, to maximise the potential to share data. The fourth workshop explored system requirements; it identified three modes of consuming information and the corresponding software requirements for each mode. The three modes identified are: Search & Retrieval, Browsing & Expiration and Information Delivery. The fifth and final workshop focused on business models and concluded that the capability was needed to identify and derive business value from Information Management. The paper closes with a research agenda required to deliver those capabilities. Fundamental research is needed to formulate a process of establishing the appropriate scope of standardisation for Information Management at project, organisation and industry levels. This research needs to unfold in the context of emerging related international standards. <br

    Evidence for increased expression of the Amundsen Sea Low over the South Atlantic during the late Holocene

    The Amundsen Sea Low (ASL) plays a major role in the climate and environment of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, including surface air temperature and sea ice concentration changes. Unfortunately, a relative dearth of observational data across the Amundsen and Bellingshausen seas prior to the satellite era (post-1979) limits our understanding of the past behaviour and impact of the ASL. The limited proxy evidence for changes in the ASL are primarily restricted to the Antarctic where ice core evidence suggests a deepening of the atmospheric pressure system during the late Holocene. However, no data have previously been reported from the northern side of the ASL. Here we report a high-resolution, multi-proxy study of a 5000-year-long peat record from the Falkland Islands, a location sensitive to contemporary ASL dynamics which modulates northerly and westerly airflow across the southwestern South Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. In combination with climate reanalysis, we find a marked period of wetter, colder conditions most likely the result of enhanced southerly airflow between 5000 and 2500 years ago, suggesting limited ASL influence over the region. After 2500 years ago, drier and warmer conditions were established, implying more westerly airflow and the increased projection of the ASL onto the South Atlantic. The possible role of the equatorial Pacific via atmospheric teleconnections in driving this change is discussed. Our results are in agreement with Antarctic ice core records and fjord sediments from the southern South American coast, and suggest that the Falkland Islands provide a valuable location for reconstructing high southern latitude atmospheric circulation changes on multi-decadal to millennial timescales

    IntCal09 and Marine09 radiocarbon age calibration curves, 0-50,000yeats cal BP

    The IntCal04 and Marine04 radiocarbon calibration curves have been updated from 12 cal kBP (cal kBP is here defined as thousands of calibrated years before AD 1950), and extended to 50 cal kBP, utilizing newly available data sets that meet the IntCal Working Group criteria for pristine corals and other carbonates and for quantification of uncertainty in both the 14C and calendar timescales as established in 2002. No change was made to the curves from 0–12 cal kBP. The curves were constructed using a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) implementation of the random walk model used for IntCal04 and Marine04. The new curves were ratified at the 20th International Radiocarbon Conference in June 2009 and are available in the Supplemental Material at www.radiocarbon.org
